Leicester band Easy Life have been trying to break into the music industry since they formed in 2017, and props to them, they’ve made it pretty far in the past three years. In July they managed to debut as Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record’ with their newest single, Earth, and bagged a place on Sunday at last years Coachella.
Since then, the 5-piece have dropped their newest EP, Junk Food. The mixtape seems to play around with the boundaries of genres, offering a jazzy-alternative-RnB-modern pop vibe. Led by vocalist Murray Matravers, Easy Life’s somewhat somber lyrics placed over a groovy, upbeat tune appears to resemble the works of artists like Rex Orange County and Jamie T.
Each of the seven tracks offers a new listening experience. You have the hard-hitting Dead Celebrities, about the ups and downs of LA experienced by the band while visiting the city. It describes how extra the lifestyle can be- “Riding with models in the back of a cop car” as well as the comedown from fame Matravers appears to be afraid of- “One day I could be a distant memory”.
Alternatively, you could opt for the chilled vibes of Nice Guys, which you can’t help but bop your head to. The bouncy accompaniment and witty lyrics, such as “I bleed gold when I fall in love”, are what makes the song such an interesting listen. It has all the aspects of a chart worthy hit.
And if you’re after easy listening, Sangria offers a sultry duet with Arlo Parks, where two try to make sense of their butterfly feelings. The song shows how easily love can become a weakness, and expresses a level of vulnerability to the listener. The contrast between Parks’ dreamy vocals and Matravers signature gritty style is just the cherry on top.
It’s definitely a demonstration of the bands potential, and I’m excited for the breath of fresh air Easy Life could bring to the music industry.
